Lovely hotel with lovely staff
+ The staff at the hotel were lovely. I was welcomed by Salma. Salma helped me each day directing me to the public transport. It was so easy to get the bus in and out of the centre of the city. My room was small, but was perfect for my 3 nights there.

You don't go to Hawker Centre Expecting a Michelin Restaraunt
+ I was bemused by some of the highly critical reviews I've seen about this hotel, specifically, due to the lack of correspondence between visitors' expectations and the type of hotel experience they paid for. My brief (one-night) stay in Hotel 81 Gold was very positive and met my expectations fully. All staff encountered were great and special mention goes to Diane, the night-shift lady, who was a model combination of effectiveness, sweetness and proactive approach. I was granted an 1.5hrs later check-out simply by asking and that was appreciated. Room was small but well designed and everything worked well, including the AC. Unlike other hotels at the same price bracket, my room had a large window, which was nice. As for the neighbourhood, which some were critical about: it's a normal residential neighbourhood and nothing in it made me feel uncomfortable. It is not Orchard Rd and, frankly, as someone who stays in 2, 3, 4 and 5 star hotels, I liked the authentic feel of it. Oh, and when entering my room, i was pleasantly surprised by the sweet gesture of staff who put effort into adding a touch of decoration and creativity to the room (see photos). To sum: as a 2-star hotel in Singapore Gold 81 provides excellent value for money.
− Walls were too thin for my preference, conducting noise more than ideal. However, it was fairly quiet at night, until past 8am.

+ The location is good, about 10min walk to two different MRT lines. Places to buy/eat food are nearby aswell as coffee shops. The rooms are clean. WiFi good, A/C or the ventilation in the bathroom can get loud. The staff (Salma and CJ) were very nice.
− The room I had was really small. There is really no room to put anything. Big suitcases wo t fit in this room, only hand luggage. Also, I can’t imagine two people staying there. That aside, with backpack or hand luggage it a good place to stay for Singapore
